Hans Zatzka, b. Vienna 1859, d. 1945
Interior with a lightly dressed woman and a lute player. Signed H. Zatzka. Oil on canvas. 69 x 105 cm.
Hans Zatzka attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After several trips to Italy he worked as a free-lance painter in Vienna, painting ceiling frescoes in stairway houses and residential buildings, numerous murals for altars in churches, and portraits. It was during this period that he developed a special interest in Academic genre paintings of idyllic women and cupids, as well as guardian angel images, elf girls, sensuous female figures, genre scenes, allegories and other popular motifs - as can be seen in this painting.
