Lot 56: Johann Zahnd (1854-1934), Painting, Italian Village Scene, 1906 Description: Oil on canvas Switzerland, 1906 Johann Zahnd (1854-1934) - Swiss painter Signed and dated 'J. Zahnd / März 1906' lower right Dimensions: 45 x 73.5 cm. Good condition Picturesque figure scene in a summerly landscape; paintings by Zahnd fetch up to €17,500 at international auctions This painting by the Swiss painter Johann Zahnd shows a recurring motif from the artist's oeuvre. The work depicts a rustic genre scene with a detailed figure composition. Some hunters are playing cards and enjoying a glass of red wine whilst a young woman is offering a further glass to a passing wanderer on horseback. In the distance, additional figures are sitting at a table. During a prolonged stay in Rome, Zahnd gained impressions of the rural life of the Campagna Romana, which he rendered in many of his paintings. In the present work he succeeded once more to capture the Italian summer's idyll with adept brushwork and bright colors. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'J. Zahnd / März 1906'. It is in good condition. The canvas shows a dent in the upper center. The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 58 x 86.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 45 x 73.5 cm. Johann Zahnd (1854-1934) Johann Zahnd was born in Schwarzburg, in the canton of Bern. He completed an apprenticeship in Switzerland and later in Florence. From 1872 he worked in Rome where he found the inspiration for many of his paintings. The peasant life in the Roman Campagna is one of the main themes within his oeuvre. In 1884 Zahnd took over the studio of the Italian painter Hermann Corrodi. In 1903 he returned to Bern, and spent the rest of his life in his native village. (tfa)
