Description:
Tobias Young (exh. 1821-1824) A view of Howick Hall, Northumberland oil on panel 12 x 16 in. (30.5 x 40.7 cm.) T. Allen in Frank Graham's The Old Halls, Houses and Inns ofNorthumberland, 1832, pp. 155-157, ill. p. 157. The ancestral seat of the Earls Grey, Howick Hall has been ownedby the Grey family since 1319. Once a magnificent tower house witha handsome court and gateway on the front, as it was described in asurvey of 1715, the hall was demolished in 1780. In its place alarger hall was built in 1782 by Newcastle architect WilliamNewton. In 1809 Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (1764-1845), after whomthe famous tea is named and who went on to become Prime Minister in1830, employed George Wyatt to enlarge the house once again. A firebroke out in 1926 destroying the whole of the interior of the mainhouse. The hall was rebuilt in 1928 according to the designs of SirHerbert Barker.

Add. Notes: pencil and watercolour 7 3/8 x 10 7/8 in. (18.7 x 27.7 cm.) Provenance
Notes: A Southampton painter of rustic and woodland scenes, Young worked very much in the manner of Thomas Girtin and John Varley. He also appears to have been a scenery painter and is said to have worked at Lord Barrymore's private theatre.
Provenance: Possibly with The Fine Art Society, London, where purchased by A.T. Loyd and by descent to the present owner.

John Tobias Young (1790-1822) View of Southampton, with the River Itchen in the foreground and Southampton Water beyond with indistinct signature and date (lower right) oil on panel 25 x 34½ in. (63.5 x 87.6 cm.) Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 13 April 1994, lot 9 (sold £7,495). Lot Notes Young spent a large proportion of his career in Southampton, principally working for Lord Barrymore. He exhibited at the Royal Institution in 1821. In the early 19th Century Southampton was a significant centre of shipbuilding and a shipyard is prominently displayed in this picture.
