Fred Yates (1922-2008) Saturday Afternoon signed and inscribed 'WXYZ. PAINTED BY/FRED YATES, BATCHELOR. AGED 45 YEARS, OF EASTDON, S. DEVON/USING HIS FINGERS' (lower centre), signed and inscribed again 'YATES FREDERICK JOSEPH/SATURDAY AFTERNOON' (on the artist's label on the reverse) oil on panelled relief 40 x 72 in. (101.6 x 182.8 cm.) Artist's Resale Right ("droit de Suite"). If the Artist's Resale Right Regulations 2006 apply to this lot, the buyer also agrees to pay us an amount equal to the resale royalty provided for in those Regulations, and we undertake to the buyer to pay such amount to the artist's collection agent.

FRED YATES Meeting the ferry, Polruan. Oil on canvas laid on hardboard. Signed. 68 x 103cm. Note: Fred Yates lived at Polruan and this picture was found in a routine house clearance. We accept that the style is uncharacteristic, however we fail to see how it can not be a genuine work. The John Martin Gallery have expressed doubts as to its authenticity. (See illustration)

Lot 4 Fred Yates 1922-2008 EZE-SUR-MER, COTES D'AZURE Oil on canvas, 7 1/2” x 9 1/2” (19 x 24cm), signed and inscribed verso. A much loved naive painter whose popularity continues to grow. He has a fine CV having exhibited extensively throughout his life. I became aware of his work when the John Martin Gallery in London took him on. In the introduction to the show John put on in 2003 he wrote “The small Yates figures were still present but now it was the landscape and architecture that dominated. He lingered over every detail with loving attention and imagined the landscape, before him in strokes of colour so thick that one wondered how much quantities of paint could be crammed onto a tiny canvas without it spilling over the edge”. Lot 1623 Fred Yates (1922-2008) oil on board, 'Eastbourne' signed, 8.25 x 7.75in. Estimate £400-600 Rather dirty but otherwise in fair order, with no lastingfaults noted, incised signature lower left, old canvas inset whitepainted frame, pen inscription verso with price of £10. This isthought to be the work of Fred Yates although some doubts have beenexpressed about the style being different from his usual heavyimpasto work. Certainly age looks correct and the work is verydirty and it is definitely not something painted within the past 10years or so. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogueformats do not include condition reports. The absence of acondition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfectcondition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections orthe effects of aging.
