EZE-SUR-MER, COTES D'AZURE
Oil on canvas, 7 1/2” x 9 1/2” (19 x 24cm), signed and inscribed verso.
A much loved naive painter whose popularity continues to grow. He has a fine CV having exhibited extensively throughout his life. I became aware of his work when the John Martin Gallery in London took him on. In the introduction to the show John put on in 2003 he wrote “The small Yates figures were still present but now it was the landscape and architecture that dominated. He lingered over every detail with loving attention and imagined the landscape, before him in strokes of colour so thick that one wondered how much quantities of paint could be crammed onto a tiny canvas without it spilling over the edge”.

Description:
Lot 1623
Fred Yates (1922-2008)
oil on board,
'Eastbourne'
signed,
8.25 x 7.75in.
Estimate £400-600
Rather dirty but otherwise in fair order, with no lastingfaults noted, incised signature lower left, old canvas inset whitepainted frame, pen inscription verso with price of £10. This isthought to be the work of Fred Yates although some doubts have beenexpressed about the style being different from his usual heavyimpasto work. Certainly age looks correct and the work is verydirty and it is definitely not something painted within the past 10years or so.
