Description:
FRED YATES (1922-2008) DAPHNE DU MAURIER'S FAMILY HOME, BODINNICK, CORNWALL, 1967 Signed, also inscribed and dated verso, oil on masonite 59.5 x 91cm. * Daphne du Maurier moved into ````Ferryside```` (formerly ````Swiss Cottage````) at Fowey in May 1927 when she was just 19. It had been spotted by her mother and two sisters and the family fell in love with it. Daphne's first novel, ````The Loving Spirit```` (1931), was written whist she lived there. Cornwall inspired her finest writings and the nearby village of Menabilly, which became ````Manderley```` in her defining work ````Rebecca```` (1938), was her home from 1943. Fowey was to become a literal and a spiritual sanctuary for her. In her diary, she wrote of "the lights of Polruan and Fowey. Ships anchored, looking up through blackness. The jetties, white with clay. Mysterious shrouded trees, owls hooting, the splash of muffled oars in lumpy water All I want is to be at Fowey. Nothing and no one else. This, now, is my life." Yates was not yet a professional painter when he produced this picture. Born and bred in Manchester, he worked as an art teacher at Dawlish in Devon before settling in a cottage close to the harbour in Fowey in 1968/69 and lived there until moving to rural Provence in France in 1998. ++ Thick impasto intact; granular residue in sky
