Description:
Description: WIJCK, THOMAS 1616 Beverwijk - vor 1677 Haarlem Italienische Landschaft mit Reisenden an einem Hafen. Öl auf Eichenholz. 47,5 x 63cm. Signiert links auf dem Boot: TWyck. Rahmen. WIJK, THOMAS 1616 Beverwijk - before 1677 Haarlem Italian Landscape with Travellers in a Harbour. Oil on oak. 47,5 x 63cm. Signed left on the boat: TWyck. Framed. Assessment: Enclosed is an original photo expertise by Elisabeth Bernt, Munich, dated December 12, 1967. Although it is not certain that Thomas Wijk made journeys to Italy, research counts him among the group of the Bamboccianti. His motifs depicting the simple, folksy life in an Italian scenery show an obvious affinity to Asselijn, Weenix, Berchem and Lingelbach. It cannot be said with certainty whether or not Thomas Wijk met "Bamboccio", that is Pieter von Laer, in Haarlem and whether an artistic exchange took place. Like in the here presented piece Wijk's compositions often have a stage-like character with staged scenery and "arranged lighting". The observer virtually looks with a slight worm's-eye view from the parquet onto the event.

Acquired by the family between 1815-1830; Thence by descent. 737 PROPERTY FROM A GERMAN PRINCELY FAMILY Thomas Wijck BEVERWIJK CIRCA 1616 - 1677 HAARLEM RIDERS BY ITALIANATE RUINS WITH A SEAPORT BEYOND signed lower left: Twijck oil on canvas 100.3 by 84.8 cm.; 39 1/2 by 33 3/8 in. Estimate 8,000 - 12,000 GBP Print The picture is fresher in tone and more luminous in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been lined and the paint surface is in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint visible to the naked eye. There is surface dirt and a mottled varnish overall as well as a little minor cosmetic work in the sky which is visible only upon very close inspection. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the aforementioned work as well as the presence of the varnish which impedes full inspection however there is evidence of some old minor scattered strengthening to the architecture. Offered in a Victorian gilt and brown wood frame in good overall condition.
