Carl Wuermer maintained a record book in which he documented his paintings, which he numbered on the reverse. He commenced work on
Winter Silence
in his New York City studio in March 1972; he completed it in 31 1/2 days. Wuermer typically worked on a piece for about 18 or 19 days. The original composition featured a road with mailboxes to one side, but it was revised by the artist to include a stream. If a painting depicted a specific site, he generally noted the location in his record book. Since there is no such notation for the present work, it is most likely a compilation, inspired by the pencil drawings that the artist made on-site and employed as reference material for his paintings. Wuermer died on December 2, 1981; his date of death is often erroneously given as 1982 or 1983. We thank James Rudolph, who is preparing a catalogue raisonne of the artist's work, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
