Description: GEORGE WRIGHT (american late 19th/early 20th century)/span "MUTE APPEAL" Signed, dated, and located 'George Wright / Phila 1884' bottom left, oil on canvas 20 x 16 in. (50.8 x 40.6cm) provenance: /spanFreeman's, Philadelphia, ca. 1940. The Collection of Dr. Joseph A. Ritter, Narberth, Pennsylvania. By descent in the family. Private Collection, Florida. note:/span The present painting may have been executed by the artist George W. Wright (1834-1934). An American who painted Victorian genre scenes, examples of his works can be found in the Hudson River Museum, New York. Fine overall condition with no evidence of restoration. The unlined canvas with tiny paint loss at bottom edge at left which touches part of the number '1' in the 1881 date. There is a small outward bulge in canvas in this area. There is a small amount of extraneous gold paint (from frame presumably) at top edge far right. There are some missing paint chips to part of rug at lower center right. Frame: 28 1/2 x 24 1/2 in.
