PROVENANCE: By descent through the family of William Frederick Witherington andFrederick Richard Pickersgill Pickersgill studied under his maternal uncle, William FrederickWitherington. It is difficult to be precise about the attributionof the various albums, but the small album bound in red calf, withstudies of Egyptian, Roman and mediaeval figures is attributable toPickersgill. The loose sketches of seated boys are very reminiscentof figures from Witherington's paintings.
