Description:
PAUL WEBER (AMERICAN, 1823 - 1916) THE RIVER CROSSING.
Oil on canvas landscape scene shows a red-shirted man on horseback at edge of river with cows crossing. Tree and grass-lined banks leading to distant hills under white cloud and blue sky Signed "PAUL WEBER" and dated "1864". Housed in its outstanding original gesso-decorated deep antique gilt frame with gilt bead decorated liner. The frame carrying a "FOSTER BROTHERS" framing label on reverse. Also a partial "BOSTON ATHENAEUM" label with name "SKINNER" in pen. According to the book, "Art Exhibition Index of the Boston Athenaeum from 1827-1874", by Perkins & Gavin. On page 149, in 1871-72, there was a landscape painting owned by Mrs. F. Skinner by Paul Weber. We believe this to be the painting. SIZE: 12-1/2" X 19-1/2". CONDITION: Very good. 9-99822 (5,500-7,500)

Overall craquelure, commensurate with age; slight discoloration
around four edges, possible result of being covered at one time
beneath a different frame; slight frame abrasion along top and
lower left edge; relined canvas; scattered in-painting throughout
green trees and ground cover, notably a 2 x 1" patch in right bank
of trees; scattered in-painting in sky region, notably a 1 x 1"
region in upper left quadrant and a 1.5 x 1.5" region immediately
above the tree in the upper right quadrant; otherwise good
condition.

Lot Notes
Born in Darmstadt in January 1823, Paul Weber was a painter of
landscapes, animals and genre subjects. He is recorded as having
travelled to the Orient in 1846, and exhibited in Vienna in 1868.
In 1871 he settled in Munich where he remained for the rest of his
life.
