born in darmstadt, germany, paul weber first traveled to the united stattes in 1848 at the age of 25. after settling in philadelphia, weber began to exhibit frequnetly at the pennsylvania academy of the fine arts, as well as at the national academy of design in new york, the boston athenaeum and the paris salon. weber's mastery of draughtsmanship and keen observation of nature are hallmarks of his german training, and are also evident in the works of william trost richards and william stanley haseltine, both of whom were students of weber's in philadelphia. in 1860 the artsist returned to his native germany, where he was named court painter in darmstadt. provenance: alexander gallery, new york acquired by the present owner from the above, 1978 exhibited: (probably) philadelphia, pennsylvania, the pennsylvania academy of the fine arts, 1856
