WILLIAM EDWARD WEBB (1862-1903) At a Quay-side bears strengthened signature 'W.Webb' (lower left) oil on canvas 15 1/2 x 23 in ( 39.4 x 58.4 ) The painting depicts a ship of The Inman Line (possibly the S.S City of.Chicago) and other shipping in a harbour . The Inman Line operated out of Liverpool and other ports, servicing a number of cross Atlantic routes. From the mid to late nineteenth century as a company it led the drive to replace wood hulled paddle steamers with iron -hulled screw propelled ships.

William Edward Webb (British, 1862-1903) Sailing ships in harbour signed "W Webb" lower left oil on canvas 52 x 72cm (20 x 28in) Oil of canvas which has been lined. There are small areas of old damage in the sky which have been filled and retouched. The paint layer in a good, stable condition. The varnish is even and semi-glossy. The frame is in a good condition.

WILLIAM EDWARD WEBB (ENGLISH, 1862-1903) Liverpool: An Inman liner (probably the S.S. 'City of Chicago') with Dock Board building to the left Oil on canvas Signed 'W. Webb' (lower left) 15½ x 23½in. (39.5 x 59.5cm.) Provenance: With the Hampshire Gallery, 1990. ~~*~~ Inman Line ships, distinguished by a single white stripe on a black funnel, had distinctive rigs and funnel arrangements. The later ships often had three close funnels supplemented by two or three masts of various rig. The vessel depicted here is notable for having a pair of funnels and four masts of which the City of Chicago (launched1883 - wrecked 1892) seems to be the only candidate.
