office of alfred waterhouse 1830-1905 a perspective drawing of manchester town hall pen and grey ink and watercolour over pencil heightened with bodycolour 121 by 149 cm., 47 1/2 by 58 1/2 in. alfred waterhouse (1830-1905) was responsible for many of manchester's civic buildings, including manchester town hall. this impressive neo-gothic building was completed in 1887 and cost a million pounds. it stands on a triangular shaped site and rises 286 feet above albert square. at the front main entrance stands a statue of the roman governor, agricol and various carved statues of manchester's great men are also prominent. internally, the hall has three great spiral staircases which accentuate the triangular plan of the building. hammerbeam ceilings and dark vaulted corridors lit by small arched windows add to the gothic feel of the building. the entrance hall is filled with numerous busts and statues of city benefactors and the great hall is decorated with twelve large murals by ford madox brown alfred waterhouse was born in liverpool and spent much of his youth travelling in europe and studying in france and germany. in later life he set up an architectural practice in manchester, where he worked for twelve years before moving to london. in manchester he was commissioned to design many new public buildings, such as the refuge assurances building in oxford street and the national provincial bank. he also produced many buildings for the city of liverpool and designed the natural history museum in kensington
