The present portrait of Walker's patron, Frederic Leighton, wasexhibited at the R.A. in 1877. The Art Journal wrote 'The portraitwhich we most affect in Gallery IV is that of F.Leighton Esq., R.A.in a brown velvet jacket. We are glad to see that the artist,J.Hanson Walker, has really risen to the height of thesubject". Under black light: overall with heavy milky-green varish withpossible area of restoration to left of bodice; relined; losses topigment in u.r. corner, @ 6" from u.r. with loss to canvas and @1-1/2 x 1/2" area of loss l.r.; surface abrasions along left edge;some yellowing to varnish; scattered vertical scratches to surfacewith minor pigment loss, each @ 1-2" in length across the centersection of painting.
