SAMSUDIN WAHAB (b. 1984) Untitled, 2011, Acrylic, enamel paint and bitumen on canvas

Gilbert & George Burger, anyone? Samsudin Wahab believes strongly that all living beings should exist in co-existence and not be disrespectful of one another, or worse exploit, discriminate or harm others. So, in a sardonic way, he decides to sacrifice the British art duo icon Gilbert & George, with the head inverted to each other, as a burger sandwich. Gilbert & George, both in their 70s and who call themselves 'human sculptures' are known for their colourful and large photo-based works on soci-political issues. This work was donated towards the World Wildlife Fund for endangered specis conservation.Samsudin Wahab graduated with a Bachelor (Hons) Fine Arts, Majoring in Printmaking, from the University Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) in 2007. His diploma was at its Seri Iskandar, Perak, campus in 2005. He is co-founder of Cetak Kolektif (focusing on printmaking), and a member of the Sebijipadi Studio and sound-performance group SO. In October, he took part in the Kuandu Biennale in South Korea. He won the Juror's Award in the Young Contemporaries national competition in 2013, the Malaysia Emerging Artists Award in 2009, 2nd Prize in Goethe-Institut's Salon Meets Art (2007), and Consolation Prizein the Tanjung Heritage 2005 competition. He was selected for art residences in Rimbun Dahan (2009), Taksu Kuala Lumpur (2009), and Khazanah Nasional's Art residency in Mumbai, India (2010) and was among 16 Malaysian figurative artists showcased in the Art Stage Singapore in 2013. His solos include Enough (Taksu Gallery, KL, 2008), Not Enough (Galeri Chandan, KL, 2010), Self-Parody (15th Rimbun Dahan, Selangor, 2010), and 'Propositions for the Future' installation (Fergana Art, Penang Whiteway, 2015).

Young & New Part I
, HOM Arttrans, Kuala Lumpur, 2008.

Illustrated here is a ferocious dog with its jaw wide open in the midst of delivering a speech. It wears the spiked crown from Libertas, the Roman goddess who is the symbol of liberty. The original torch and tablet evoking the law have been replaced by a gas nozzle and a wind up mechanism. Ironically, placed over the neck of the creature are a spiked leash and an alphabet necklace comprised of the word \‘AKAL\’\’\’\’, which means deception.

Samsudin Wahab skilfully incorporates elements of tattoo artistry, street aesthetics, and Japanese woodblock prints to express social political themes in his paintings. Having formally trained in print making, he developed a highly stylized form of combining vivid iconography accompanied with provocative texts. His travelling exhibits abroad are able to communicate a universal idea that transcends geographical boundaries. Universal resonance is achieved through the \‘personification of animals and the use of momento mori skulls and skeletons\’\’\’\’. Dark humour and satire are infused with narratives based on keen observations and reflections on the surrounding landscape. His artistic practice covers an extensive spectrum of print making, installations, sculptures, and sound and video art.

Upon obtaining his B.A (Hons) Art & Design (Fine Arts) at the MARA Institute of Technology in 2007, Samsudin Wahab won the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEA Award) in 2009. He exhibited his first solo exhibition

Enough!

in 2008 at Taksu Gallery KL. As part of the MEA showcase in 2010, his second solo show titled

Not Enoug
h was exhibited at Galeri Chandan. He has exhibited in collective group exhibitions abroad in countries such as Denmark and Korea, including international art fairs such as Art Stage Singapore 2013.He participated in the Rimbun Dahan Malaysia-Australia year-long residency programme in 2009-2010 and is a member of the experimental sound and performance group SO Sound. He was the first recipient of the Fergana Art Fellowship (Visual Arts), which serves as a platform for contemporary artists to reflect and explore new directions in their art practice.

Description:

Mandatory-On-Air is one of ten paintings which were displayed in Samsuddin Wahab's solo exhibition titled Not Enough after winning the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award in 2010. Illustrated here is a skeletal figure sitting on a white electric chair - depicted pushing the switch down to 'ON' - triggering an electric shock as represented by the shock hazard signs.

The show Not Enough represents the artist's "dreams of an unwritten future." It marks "a new beginning of subject matter his work transcends mere graphic illustration through poetic metaphors and visual strategies that emphasise a new phase of self questioning and realisation. Fluctuating between the real world and the dream world his contradictions, hopes and desires emerge in a confessionary moment that represents a new chapter for yet more epic takes on reality and illusion."

One of Malaysia's most exciting contemporary artists, Samsudin Wahab creates large scale works in a surreal manner conveying his concerns over "issues of conspiracy, social power, and governmental control over the masses". His subject matter of politics and social commentary is depicted with high intellect and wit, displaying a concoction of digital iconography, comic book and tattoo-styled imagery to form and to derive from an elusive fantasy. A graduate from UiTM Seri Iskandar Perak in 2005, he then obtained his degree in Printmaking with a Bachelor (Hons) in Fine Art from UiTM, Shah Alam in 2007. He held his first solo exhibition titled Enough! in 2008 where this piece was displayed. He was the recipient of the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award in 2008 which granted him a solo show titled Not Enough in Kuala Lumpur in 2010. He participated in an artist residency programme at Rimbun Dahan from 2009 to 2010. He belongs to the experimental sound and performance group SO sound. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Malaysia, Denmark and Korea since 2003 with his participation at Art Stage Singapore in 2013 that displayed his epic piece titled Spectacular (2012).

Enough!

, Gallerie Taksu, Kuala Lumpur, 2008;

illustrated on exhibition catalogue page 4 and 5.

Two masculine figures dressed in plain vest singlet with revolver heads facing each other at point blank range are depicted here in the act of arm wrestle. Anxiety strikes as the sight of wire pulley attaching each revolver trigger to an arm gives the viewer a dreaded thought that the fight may end tragically. Three dark cupids with angel wings hovering around the figures like flies - observing the match with their bow and arrow in ready-to-shoot position - as if the fate of the participants fall in their hands. The dramatic clouds in the background exude theatricality in the play of politics as the word \‘Boneka\’\’\’\’ (puppet) reads on the banner below. The canvas is painted in warm reddish-brown and monochromatic dark tones finished off with a layer of bitumen to achieve an archival sepia effect.

The unnerving picture of a \‘Tree Man\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ with feet in cement cast and the right side of the body self-bevelled is a morbid psychological contemplation. Some kind of ennui has set in after years of being an artist, and the \‘victim\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ feels that he has to resort to a self-mutilation of sorts to set himself free, so that he can move on to new things. On another level, it could be read as a degradation of the environment where the \‘Tree Man\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ faces inevitable doom.Samsudin Wahab graduated with a Bachelor (Hons) Fine Arts, Majoring in Printmaking, from the University Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) in 2007.
