Jonathan Armigel Wade (b. 1960) Annunciation signed 'J. Wade' (lower left) and signed and inscribed 'ANNUNCIATION/JONATHAN WADE' (on the reverse) oil on board 22½ x 28¾ in. (57.2 x 73 cm.) Artist's Resale Right ("droit de Suite"). Wade's representation of the Annunciation has given the traditional iconography a modern twist. Wade has depicted Mary, Joseph and the Archangel Gabriel in a town, painted in his own characteristic style, using objects and items from our modern society to symbolise the Annunciation and other Biblical references. The no-entry sign represents the Immaculate Conception; the bubble car = donkey; the Christmas tree = the Nativity; the empty pram = Herod's Massacre of the Innocents; the pyramids = the flight into Egypt; and the rolled away manhole cover = the Resurrection.
