Mihály Munkácsy (Hungarian, 1844-1909) Un Vagabond de Nuit signed 'Munkacsy' (upper right) oil on panel 32 5/8 x 25 7/8 in. (82.9 x 65.7 cm.)
Princess Valerie zu Schleswig-Holstein. By descent to her husband, Prince Engelbert-Charles, 10th Duke of Arenberg. By descent to his second wife, née Mathild Cally. By descent to her son-in-law. Acquired by a nephew of the above in the 1960s, The Netherlands.
This painting is a study for the central figure in one of Munkácsy's most celebrated works of the same title, today in the National Gallery of Hungary, Budapest.
