Description:
Lot 33: Julius von Klever (1850-1924), Country Lane at Sunset Description: Oil on panel Russia, presumably 1915 Julius von Klever (1850-1924) - Russian Yuli Yulevich Klever, Russian landscape painter of Baltic German descent Signed lower right in Cyrillic 'Ju. Klever' Verso barely legible inscribed in cyrillic with the name of the artist and dated 1915 Dimensions: 16 x 22 cm Good Condition Provenance: Private Collection England, according to information of the previous owner since the 1960s in the possession of the family in Georgia (who later emigrated to England), probably acquired around 1960 in Georgia from a private collection Klever was famous for its excellent elaborated representations of nature and melancholy sunset moods that were popular even at the Tsar's court. In certain aristocratic circles it was considered a 'faux pas' not to own a painting by Klever; Compositions in comparable small format fetch up to €20,000 on the international art market. This painting, executed in oil on panel, comes from the hand of Russian painter Julius von Klever and presumably originated in 1915 shortly after his return to Russia. Shown is a field landscape with farmstead. A path leads the viewer's eye into the depths, past a peasant woman in a red dress. On the horizon appears the setting sun that bathes the open countryside in a moody light. The image is perfectly executed in loose brushwork with accentuated colored areas that refelect a unique expressiveness. The painting is signed in Cyrillic 'Ju. Klever' bottom right and is further barely legible inscribed in Cyrillic with the artist's name and the date 1915. It is in good condition with only minor abrasions around the edges and light superficial scratches. The image measures 16 x 22 cm, the framed dimensions are 36 x 29.5 cm. Julius Sergius von Klever (1850-1924) Julius Sergius von Klever was born in 1859 in the Russian town Dorpat. From 1867 he attended the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, where he studied with Worobjoff and Mikhail K. Klodt. Awarded with multiple medals he soon acquired considerable reputation. In 1881 he was appointed professor of the Academy of Fine Arts. In the mid-90s von Klever moved temporarily to Germany with his family since a friend of him got engaged in a financial scandal at the Academy. He returned back to Russia in 1915. Usually being the only Russian painter, he was represented in international exhibitions in Berlin, Munich and Paris. His landscape images originate very often from the Baltic region where his home is and bear witness to a melancholy mood, which is why Julius Sergius von Klever is regarded as representative of the so called lyrical-romantic landscapes.
