Johann Georg von Dillis (Grüngiebing 1759–1841 Munich) A mountain valley and a homestead, inscribed and dated “13. Oktober 1826 f. Dillis G.” on the reverse, black pen, over pencil, brown wash, on laid paper, 18,7 x 23,8 cm, slightly browned, mounted, framed, (Sch) Provenance: Private collection, Germany. Between 1822–1830 Dillis made a series of small paintings with views of farmsteads and pastures in the Bavarian mountains, for which he may have executed several preliminary studies after nature. The present study may be one of these preliminary studies; it renders the farmhouse in the characteristic light atmosphere of an afternoon sun. The composition with a road leading diagonally into the background, the single farmhouse and the steeply ascending area behind it recall the paintings „Mountain farmhouse in autumn sun“ and „Mountain valley with farmstead in early autumn“ (Munich 1992, Cat. Lot Notes The date on this drawing is very similar to that of a drawingmade in Lausanne and now in a private collection (H. Sieveking,Johann Georg von Dillis, exhib. cat., Munich, Neue Pinakothek, andelsewhere, 1992, no. 111). In 1797 Dillis accompanied LordOssulton, son of the 4th Earl of Tankerville, on a tour ofSwitzerland that included Zürich and Lausanne.
