Tyrolean man – fine overall condtion; Companion figure in green hat – in apparently fine overall condition – a bit difficult to 'read' with certainty under u.v. light; however we believe the hue variations seen under u.v. are due to varnish inconsistencies and pigments used rather than due to restoration
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. Other WORKS AT AUCTION
Description:
Franz von Defregger (Stronach 1835-1921 Munich) Zur Gesundheit signed 'F. Defregger' (lower right), inscribed and dated 'Fuer die Kegelbahn Dem Freund Emil Rosenbomen am 29 Juni 1890' (lower right) oil on canvas 106.5 x 102 cm.
The present lot closely resembles two paintings depicted in H.P. Defregger, Defregger 1835-1921, Munich, 1983, pp. 188, 322. Although Defregger made use of different sizes of canvas, the overall composition equals the two other versions. However, the manner in which the works were painted, differ slightly. Whereas the present painting seems to be more schematic, the other two versions have a thicker layer of paint and obtain fewer details.
