Description:
Description: Emmanuel Villanis (French, 1858-1914) Papillon Gilt bronze, depicting Psyche as a winged nymph standing atop roses on a naturalistic base, signed in cast "E. Villanis" and titled "Papillon", the verso with pastille marked Exposition de 1900 Medaille d'Or, M.D. Paris . H: 31 1/4, W: 10, D: 7 in. PROVENANCE: A statue of the same size and subject sold Bonhams, Los Angeles, October 16, 2011. The bronze with slight wear to gilding on one elbow and in overall very good condition. Notes: Emmanuel Villanis (1858-1914) exhibited at eleven salons between 1886 and 1910. Born to Italian parents, Villanis lived in France as a foreigner and was unable to receive large scale public commissions. As a result, he specialized in small scale sculpture, creating more than 200 works, many of women and some inspired by the music of his time. The inspiration for Papillon has been attributed to the composer Gabriel Urbain Fauré. The sculpture is characteristic of Villanis' style in its depiction of the figure with hollowed out eyes and the inclusion of the sculpture's title in the casting of the base. LITERATURE: Hortulanus- de Mik, Josje. Emmanuel Villanis . 2002, pg. 45 (illustrated).
