Emmanuel Villanis (French, 1858-1914) An Art Nouveau Patinated Bronze Bust of the Operatic Character 'Lalla Roukh', circa 1890 depicted in off-the-shoulder traditional Mughal style dress, wearing a head scarf adorned with metal discs, long flowing hair around her shoulders, titled to base plinth 'Lalla Roukh' 64.5cm high, signed in cast, with impressed foundry seal for 'VRAI.BRONZE.GARANTI.PARIS' Footnotes 'Lalla Roukh' is the title character in a French Opera first performed in Paris in 1862. It is a love story between the King of Samarkand and the Mughal princess Lalla Roukh.
