Lot 345 Eugène Verboeckhoven (Belgian, 1799-1881) Sheep and Hens in a Stable Interior Signed and dated "Eugène Verboeckhoven/F. 1870" c.l., inscribed, signed, and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 29 x 24 3/4 in. (74.0 x 62.8 cm), unframed. Condition: Punctures, craquelure, stretcher bar mark, wear to tacking edges, surface grime. Estimate $1,500-2,500 Inscribed by the artist in ink within a painted rectangle on the reverse, "Je soussigné déclare que/le tableau si contre est original./Eugène Verboeckhoven/Sch....Bruxelles 1870." Also initialed on the reverse, "G.H.B." L-shaped tear measuring 1-3/8 x 1/2 inches and a 3/8 inch puncture both with surrounding paint losses located in upper left quadrant. Puncture to lower right, located in the sheep's back, measuring 3/8 inch with localized paint loss measuring about 1 inch, located 10 inches up and 6 1/2 inches in from the lower right corner. Scattered very minor paint losses, weakened or torn tacking edges to top and left sides, stable craquelure and stretcher bar marks. No apparent retouch.
