Littérature: Harewood Catalogue, p.67). (Voirhistorique p. .............). Dim.:22.4x17.3cm. Ci-joint, l’historiquedes lots 140 et 145, tel qu’il fut présenté par Christie’slors de la vente du 10 mars 1978 : THE PROPERTY OF HER LATE ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCESS ROYAL Sold by order of the Trustees DAVID TENIERS THE YOUNGER The following 12 lots are mostly copies by david Teniers IIafeter paintings then in the collection of the ArchdukeLeopold-Wilhelm, Governor of the Netherlands from1646-56, and housed in the Palais de Coudenbrug, Brussels. The Archduke had arrived from Spain withover 500 paintings and while Governor, acquired some 900more. On his resignation, the collection wasmoved to Vienna and by his bequest became the substantial nucleusfor the Habsburg Imperial Collection, much of whichremains in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Teniers had become painter and ayuda de camera to the Archdukein Brussels by 1651. It is not known when he embarked onthe project of publishing a catalogue of prints after the picturesin the collection. His plan to begin with the italianpaintings and proceed to the Netherlandish school was frustrated bythe removal of the collection to Vienna, although theArchduke gave permission for a group of pictures to remain behindtemporarily to enable Teniers to complete copies presumably then inhand. The copies were executed as modelli for engravers. In1658 the Theatrum Pictorium Davidis Teniers was published : itcontained just over 240 prints. The early history of the modelli is not known. Justunder half of them were probably acquired by John, 1stDuke of Marlborough, and were noted at Blenheim Palace byVertue in 1740 (see Vertue Note Books, V, TheWalpole Society, vol. 26, p.135). They were subsequently listed by Scharf (see G. Scharf, Catalogue Raisonné of the Pictures in BlenheimPalace, 1862, pp. 144-171), exhibited in Mr Davies’s Galleries in 1884, inLondon, and sold in these Rooms on July 26, 1886. The majority of the modelli offered below were at BlenheimPalace. They form the final group from a collection whichwas gradually assembled by the Earl of Harewood (see T. Borenius, Catalogue of the Pictures ... inthe collection of the Earl of Harewood, etc., 1936, pp. 68-69) and Her late RoyalHighness, the Princess Royal, whose executorsdeposited it on loan to Kenwood (see the catalogue, Cabinet pictures by David Teniers, Kenwood, 1972 ed.). Vertue stated that ‘from these small pieces were done theprinted book by Teniers’, a view doubted—and recentlyendorsed by Hans Vlieghe, Genste Bijdragen, XIX, 1961-69, p. 136—and which isthe great majority of cases is undoubtedly correct. The prints are about the same size as the modelli. Thename of the engraver, the attribution then current to thepainter of of the prototype and indication of its size calculatedin pieds or palmes is given on each plate. Margins laterfilled in are occasionally delectable on the modelli, occasionally Tenier’s indistinct notes, especiallyconcerning the measurements, are detectable on the marginalong the bottom edge. For the most part the copies arefairly exact, although often the spatial contours of acomposition may have beenextended. Date de vente : 21/06/2011 Résultat : 5000 €
