Anonymous sale; Van Marle & Bignell, The Hague, 12 March 1974, lot 409, (for Dfl. 9,500). Anonymous sale; A. Mak, Dordrecht 13 June 1978, lot 193. Anonymous sale; Christie's, London, 5 July 1990, lot 87, as attributed to Jacob van Strij. This painting is a copy with slight variations after a composition by Aelbert Cuyp (see Hofstede de Groot, 1908, nr. 59b). Most notable, the card playing soldiers in the centre of the composition in Cuyp's original were changed by Van Stry into his typical herdsmen and cows.
