Description:
Louis-Michel Van Loo (French, 1707-1771), "The Marquise de Marigny (1751-1822)", 1769, oil on canvas, signed and dated mid-right, remnants of "Milton Park Gallery, Oklahoma" and "Wildenstein Arte, Buenos Aires" labels en verso, 36 in. x 28 1/2 in., framed. Provenance: Wildenstein and Co., Buenos Aires. Exh. "Pinturas Fracesas del Siglo XVIII", Wildenstein Arte, Buenos Aires, July 1948, no. 10. Note: Louis-Michel Van Loo, nephew of Carle Van Loo, studied in Turin and Rome before becoming a court painter for King Philip V of Spain. In 1753, Van Loo painted many court portraits in Paris under King Louis XV, including the lovely canvas presented here of the Marquise de Marigny. Marie Françoise Constance Julie Filleul was the illegitimate daughter of King Louis XV and his mistress in the early 1700s, Marie Irene Catherine du Buisson de Longpré. Filleul married Abel François Poisson de Vandières in 1767, and the king soon made the couple the Marquis and Marquise de Marigny. Poisson de Vandières was the brother of the king\’s favorite mistress, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, the famous Madame de Pompadour. In this portrait, Van Loo depicts the sitter in an elegant silk gown with a delicate stripe and flower pattern, covered by an ermine and velvet robe, while the styling of her hair and jewelry perfectly fits the court fashions of the mid-18th century.
