Jan van Huchtenburg (Dutch, 1647-1733) A Cavalry Skirmish near a wood in an extensive landscape oil on canvas 61 x 74cm (24 x 29in) Oil on canvas which is lined. There is an old horizontal tear in the upper left in the sky. There are a few scattered paint losses along the lower edge but overall the paint layer is in a good condition. The varnish is degraded, matte and very yellowed. Beneath the varnish there are retouchings, but it is difficult to see the extent of the overpaint due to the darkened varnish. There are a few losses to the decorative moulding on the frame.

Cook, Doughty House, vol. II, p. 47, no. 269; W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts, vol. II, Munich 1969, no. 561 According to Walther Bernt (see the copy of his communication, dated February 1964), the present painting is one of the best works by Jan van Huchtenburgh, a painter of battle scenes. Large-format engraving over three mounted sheets. Attractive, even impression with margins. the margins with slight browning and slightly wavy. Former vertical folds visible. Generally in good condition.

«Die Schlacht bei Peterwardein. 1716 (the battle at Peterwardein. 1716)». Bistre and red chalk over silverpoint on wove paper, mounted on strong wove paper. Unsigned. Verso handwritten inscribed with the artist's name, titled and inscribed «Von het schilderij in Turijn», as well as numbered «2218». Verso on the back board inscribed with the artist's name on a printed label, titled and inscribed with the work's data and information of provenance. Mounting partially removed, creasing, minor foxing, small paper imperfections. Restored.
