Van Geel's early works show close affinity with the paintings of his Middelburg contemporaries Mattheus Molanus and Christoffel van den Berghe. This painting is closer in style to the works of his later period of activity in Dordrecht, between 1633 and 1637, when his palette is more subdued. The general structure of the composition can be compared with van Geel's Landscape with trees and a river, of circa 1634-7, while the protruding, finger-like trees, which are a distinctive feature of his work, appear in the signed and dated work of 1635: Mountain landscape with ruins (N. Bakker, et. al., Masters of Middelburg: Exhibition in the honour of Laurens J. Bol, Amsterdam, March 1984, p. 250, no. 67, and p. 246, no. 65 respectively).

Other WORKS AT AUCTIONDescription:
van geel was recorded in the middelburg guild of st. luke in 1615, moved to delft in 1621 and by 1633 had settled in dordrecht. his last painting dates from 1638. van geel painted in the flemish mannerist tradition throughout his career, and his landscapes, which like the present picture are usually tiny, are characterised by their distinctive, whimsical trees. described by l.j. bol as 'tormented trees of a tormented artist', these extraordinary curious fungoidal trees can be also be seen in this picture (see l.j. bol, 'een middelburgse brueghel-groep vi ? jacob van geel', in: oud holland, 72, 1957, pp. 20-40). works on copper by van geel, such as the present one, are very rare. stylistically this work can probably be dated to quite late in the artist's career, circa 1637/38. exhibited delft, stedelijk museum het prinsenhof, de stad delft, cultuur en maatschappij 1572/1667, 1981 (not in the catalogue).
