Sale 09PT02 Lot 159 Hendrik-Dirk Kruseman Van Elten American, 1829-1904 Esopus Creek Near Kingston, New York Signed Kruseman Van Elten (lr); titled on an old label affixed to the reverse Oil on canvas 14 1/8 x 22 1/8 inches Born and trained in Holland, Hendrik-Dirk Kruseman Van Elten came to the United States in 1865. He began printmaking a decade later and was highly regarded for his etchings. Exhibiting at the National Academy of Design from 1866 until 1900, Van Elten resided in New York City, but maintained a summer home in Ellenville, New York. In 1873, a critic in The New York Times praised Van Elten's work at the Somerville, Gallery, where the artist evidently planned to auction his paintings in preparation for a trip to Europe. The unidentified critic singled out a work entitled Esopus Creek, with Cattle as "a fairly-worked out composition, showing careful study and good color." [Unidentified author, "The Van Elten Collection," The New York Times , March 2, 1873, p. 5] It is impossible to determine if the present work was the piece that the writer found so satisfactory, nor if it was even included in the exhibition, but Van Elten appears to have depicted the subject on more than one occasion. In August 1874, an etching by the artist entitled Esopus Creek, Near Kingston, NY was published in The Aldine . Esopus Creek has its origins in the Catskill Mountains but empties into the Hudson River near Saugerties, New York. Estimate $3,000-5,000 Wax lined. Scattered inpaint: in the sky; at the upper left corner; at the right edge in the trees; and near the signature. Signature may have been reinforced. Repaired tear at center in trees, roughly 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 inches. Any condition statement is given as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Doyle New York shall have no responsibility for any error or omission. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging.
