Pieter van der Werff

KRALINGEN-AMBACHT 1665 - 1722 ROTTERDAM

DAPHNIS AND CHLOE IN A WOODED LANDSCAPE

oil on panel

16 by 13 in.; 40.4 by 33.4 cm.

Panel is uncradled and beveled on all four sides. painting is under a dull, uneven old varnish which is especially noticeable in the background areas. a very small horizontal crack can be seen at the far left side at center. the paint surface on the figures has been quite well retained with very nice detail. the background landscape and foliage is harder to judge through the old varnish, but there appears to be a greater degree of thinness in these areas. nothing can be seen under UV light due to the old varnish. Offered in an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
