Although these two sheets do not join exactly, and mayoriginally have been linked by another narrow strip of paper, therelative positions of the landmarks in this grand view support Vander Haagen's proposal that the two sheets together form a singlepanorama. In the distance to the left is the town of Elst, in themiddleground, just left of center, nestles the castle of Doorwerth, while on the horizon towards the right we see the silhouette ofNijmegen. Joris van der Haagen was one of a number of seventeenth-centuryDutch landscape artists who were attracted by the expansive vistasof the lower Rhine region, near the modern Dutch-German border.Perhaps the most notable of the various drawings that he made inthe area is the large view of the Elterberg, in theRijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam.1 1. Inv 1912:13. See M. Schapelhouman and P. Schatborn, Land& Water, Dutch Drawings from the 17th Century in theRijksmuseum Print Room, Amsterdam 1987, no. 73, reproduced.

CATALOGUE NOTE
It is for impressive woodland scenes such as the present picture that Joris Van Der Haagen was best known. He rarely painted the staffage in his paintings which was usually contributed by Adriaen van de Velde, Ludolf de Jongh, Nicolaes Berchem or by Jan Asselijn as has been suggested for the figures and cattle of the present painting. The description and size of this picture appear to correspond very closely with a landscape by van der Haagen listed in the collection of King Willem II of the Netherlands, and seems likely to be the same picture.
We are grateful to Frits Duparc for making this attribution, on the basis of photographs, and for his help with the cataloguing this lot.

CATALOGUE NOTE
While the surname of the artist alludes to the idea he came from The Hague (Haag), his family originated from Flanders and settled in Dordrecht before moving to the east of Holland, to Arnhem. It is in this city that Joris grew up and, as his father was a painter himself, he probably was apprenticed by him. In 1639, after his father died, he moved to The Hague with his mother, where he would remain the rest of his life.1 This forest landscape, with its trees bearing curled and high-lighted branches, is typical for Van der Haagen, who often chose the surroundings of The Hague for his landscapes and city views. Also the rendering of the foliage of the water plants and the warm colouring of the sun on the water are very characteristic for the artist. See for example a signed work at the Gemeentemuseum, Arnhem (inv. no. GM 5612), also of similar size. The figures in the present work could well be painted by another hand, as Van der Haagen often co-operated with other artists, such as Ludolf de Jongh (1616-1679), Nicolaes Berchem (1621/3-1683) and Dirck Wijntrack (before 1625-1678). 1. See E. Buijsen, Haagse Schilders in de Gouden Eeuw, Zwolle 1998, pp. 146-9.
