CATALOGUE NOTE
An old label on the reverse, indistinctly inscribed and dated1856
Elias Pieter van Bommel was born in Amsterdam and studied at theRijksacademie. He received tuition from George Andries Roth(1809-1887), who influenced his early preference for paintinglandscapes.
Van Bommel travelled extensively visiting Belgium, Germany, France,Hungary and Italy and painted many works during his trips abroad. He exhibited in Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen and Leeuwardenbetween 1833-39 and 1841-59.
The present lot is a spectacular example of Van Bommel's fantasyviews. The whole setting, with many figures in a Dutch harbourunloading their goods, bathes in a beautiful light. One could nothelp being drawn into the scene, the eye meandering through themasterful composition.
