Documents pour une biographie et pour l'histoire d'une œuvre, Lausanne/Paris, 1973-75, vol. III, p. 251 Marina Ducrey, Félix Vallotton 1865-1925, Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre peint, vol. III, Lausanne, 2005, no. 1319,illustrated p. 719 Catalogue Note Felix Vallotton went on several trips in 1919, at the end of the war which had deeply marked him. This year was particularly dense for the painter, at the height of his career, with notably a new exhibition at Druet in March, followed by another he was preparing for Lausanne, at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery at the beginning of 1920. From the 2nd to the 16th of October 1919, he travelled to Brittany where he visited Saint-Malo, Vitré and Dinan. As was his habit, the painter made several sketches from life. Back in his Parisian studio on October 23rd, he sought, as he described to "resuscitate" the memories of his trip. He thus produced five paintings, including this landscape depicting the Church Saint-Sauveur in Dinan. Fascinated by the grandeur and the sumptuousness of nature, Vallotton constantly painted landscapes throughout his career. As in the present composition, he depicted an eternal nature, haloed in almost unreal light. Less concerned in portraying representational truth than atmosphere, he heightened the blue of the slate rooves which mingles with a multitude of shimmering greens. In doing so, he applied the aspirations he described in his journal in 1916: "I dream of painting that is freed from all literal respect of nature, I would like to reconstitute landscapes with the sole help of the emotion they caused in me, a few big evocative lines, one or two details, chosen, without any superstition of exactitude of the hour or of the light." The resulting feelings of eternity and of majesty were fittingly described by Paul-Elie Gernez in the article he wrote on Vallotton\’s landscapes: "Spectator, in front of them, we take part in their figurative metaphysics and we bow unbeknownst under their hold over silent things […]. Vallotton\’s landscapes […] await us in austere silence. They take us back to the nature of things and they incorporate us there." Felix Vallotton was one of Georges Renand\’s favorite artists, and he owned over a dozen works by the painter.
