Max Unold counts to the main representatives of the Neue Sachlichkeit . As a student of Moritz Heymann and Hugo von Habbermann (since
1908) he initially painted representionally according the tradition
of Wilhelm Leibl and Wilhelm Trübner. Since 1910 he as well dealt
with the style of Expressionism and was additionally from 1911
until 1913 influenced by the paintings of Paul Cézanne, whom he got
to know in Southern France. Finally he entirely turned to the
phrasing of the Neue Sachlichkeit . The motifs he found derive especially from the city and suburbian
life: People in the café, on the beach, strolling around and being
occupied with other leisure activities, or - as we see here -
workers on their lunch break. In 1913 Unold was founding member of the Münchner Neuen Sezession and had, as their last president, to experience their dissolution
enforced by the National Socialists. In 1927 he became professor on
the Academy of Arts. After the war he was elected president of
the Berufsverbandes bildender Künstler , Munich. Moreover he was also professor on the von Paish -Art School in Munich and, from 1947 until 1957, member of the
