Exhibition of the Neue Secession München, Munich 1928, no. 321, fig. Literature: Germaid Ruck, Max Unold (1885-1964) und die Münchner Malerei, mit einem Werkkatalog der Ölgemälde, Memmingen 1992, C.R.-no. 243. The artist made several studies relating to this painting, which are enclosed in the sketchbook from ca. 1927. They are today preserved in the Unold Estate Memmingen. Apart from Alexander Kanoldt, Franz Radziwill and Georg Schrimpf Max Unold counts to the main representatives of the Neue Sachlichkeit . As a student of Moritz Heymann and Hugo von Habbermann (since 1908) he initially painted representionally according the tradition of Wilhelm Leibl and Wilhelm Trübner. Since 1910 he as well dealt with the style of Expressionism and was additionally from 1911 until 1913 influenced by the paintings of Paul Cézanne, whom he got to know in Southern France. Finally he entirely turned to the phrasing of the Neue Sachlichkeit . The motifs he found derive especially from the city and suburbian life: People in the café, on the beach, strolling around and being occupied with other leisure activities, or - as we see here - workers on their lunch break. In 1913 Unold was founding member of the Münchner Neuen Sezession and had, as their last president, to experience their dissolution enforced by the National Socialists. In 1927 he became professor on the Academy of Arts. After the war he was elected president of the Berufsverbandes bildender Künstler , Munich. Moreover he was also professor on the von Paish -Art School in Munich and, from 1947 until 1957, member of the Bavarian Senate. Unold held various honorary posts, amongst others he was member of the executive board of the German Unesco-Commission.
