Lot 313 Allen Tucker American, 1866-1939 Mt. Desert Island, Maine Oil on canvas 25 x 30 inches Provenance: Private collection An architect, poet, author, teacher, lecturer and painter, Tucker was a passionate advocate for artistic free expression and he exercised this idea in his art, varying his style to capture the emotive experience of his sites. "All pictures are self portraits," he is known to have said. This painting belongs to a group of mountain scenes Tucker painted in the 1920s in which rich woven color and animated overlaid brushstrokes convey the living force of his subject and his response to it. A connection can be made between such images and the mountain scenery of Marsden Hartley. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Estimate $7,000-9,000 Strip relined. Frame rubbing, with corresponding inpaint. There is some scattered inpaint in the sky and in the mountain at the upper left quadrant. There is no further restoration visible under UV light. Lot 100 Allen Tucker American, 1866-1939 Last Bricks Signed Allen Tucker (lc); inscribed as titled on the stretcher Oil on canvas 30 x 25 inches Provenance: Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Allen Tucker: The Force of Emotion-A Post-Impressionist Rediscovered , Feb. 25-Mar. 27, 2010, p. 18 color illus., fig. 21 Literature: Lisa N. Peters, Allen Tucker: The Force of Emotion-A Post-Impressionist Rediscovered , New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC., 2010, p. 18 color illus., fig. 21 A highly prominent modernist advocate and a prolific artist well known in his time, Tucker began his career as an architect and thus always had an avid feeling for ways to incorporate built form into his art. When this painting was included in a Tucker exhibition at Spanierman gallery in 2010, Lisa N. Peters wrote in the catalogue that "Tucker was one of few artists of his day to capture the experience of the apartment city view window. . . . In Last Bricks , the orange-salmon and rust-red of the building are brilliantly offset against an azure sky. Tucker clearly delighted in these colors, only seen in places where such high walls are directly exposed to sunlight." (p. 18) The workman on a high scaffold gives this almost-abstract composition a human element and a sense of scale. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art Unsold Estimate $2,000-4,000 Strip relined. Frame rubbing. There is a touch of inpaint in the upper right corner. There is a repaired hole in the lower left corner, approximately 1/2 x 1/4 inch. There is no further restoration visible under UV light. Any condition statement is given as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Doyle New York shall have no responsibility for any error or omission. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging.

Lot 97 Allen Tucker American, 1866-1939 Portrait of a Woman Signed Allen Tucker and dated 1920 (ll) Oil on canvas 30 1/8 x 25 inches Provenance: The artist Mr. Charles Downing Lay Estate of Mr. Charles Downing Lay By descent to David Lay, his son, circa 1960 By descent to Patricia Lay Rafoss, his daughter, 1994 An artist who was at the center of the rise of modernism in America and a highly acclaimed and respected artist in the early twentieth century, Allen Tucker was a painter of landscapes and figural subjects. He was an admirer of his teacher John Twachtman, on whom he wrote a monograph in 1931. A passionate advocate for artistic freedom, Tucker saw the human figure as "a never-ending source of study, of composition, [and] of balance." Here he presented a vivid characterization of a female model who gazes with coy and ironic amusement, as if remembering a moment of humor. The image demonstrates Tucker's interest in exploring not just a subject's appearance, but also his or her inner thoughts, while the simplified treatment of the woman's form and the array of hues revolving around blues and greens reveal the modernist influence Tucker derived from his study of the work of Cézanne and van Gogh. This painting's first owner was Charles Downing Lay (1877-1956), a noted landscape architect who was Tucker's student in 1904 and maintained a friendship with him thereafter. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art Estimate $4,000-6,000 Frame rubbing. There is no visible restoration under UV light.
