"All pictures are self portraits," he is known to have said. This painting belongs to a group of mountain scenes Tucker painted in the 1920s in which rich woven color and animated overlaid brushstrokes convey the living force of his subject and his response to it. When this painting was included in a Tucker exhibition at Spanierman gallery in 2010, Lisa N. Peters wrote in the catalogue that "Tucker was one of few artists of his day to capture the experience of the apartment city view window. . . . In Last Bricks , the orange-salmon and rust-red of the building are brilliantly offset against an azure sky. Tucker clearly delighted in these colors, only seen in places where such high walls are directly exposed to sunlight." He was an admirer of his teacher John Twachtman, on whom he wrote a monograph in 1931. A passionate advocate for artistic freedom, Tucker saw the human figure as "a never-ending source of study, of composition, [and] of balance." Here he presented a vivid characterization of a female model who gazes with coy and ironic amusement, as if remembering a moment of humor. The image demonstrates Tucker's interest in exploring not just a subject's appearance, but also his or her inner thoughts, while the simplified treatment of the woman's form and the array of hues revolving around blues and greens reveal the modernist influence Tucker derived from his study of the work of Cézanne and van Gogh. This painting's first owner was Charles Downing Lay (1877-1956), a noted landscape architect who was Tucker's student in 1904 and maintained a friendship with him thereafter.
