CATALOGUE NOTE
The legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin tells the tale of a stranger who came to Hamelin claiming to be able to rid the townspeople of their 999,999 rats. They promised him a schilling for the head of every rat he could catch. Taking out his pipe the rat-catcher lured the rats with his music out of the town and into the river where they drowned. When the townspeople refused to pay him the piper took a terrible revenge. Whilst everyone was in church on a Sunday the rat-catcher took out his pipe and lured the children out of the town to the mountains where he sealed them in a cave to perish. These events supposedly took place on 26th June 1284. The earliest depiction of the story is believed to have been a stained glass window in the church of Hamelin dating to circa 1300, first described in the 14th Century. The story has been repeatedly depicted and re-written from the 15th Century until today, the most famous English version being Robert Browning's poem of 1849. . . The character of the Pied Piper is perfectly suited to Troger's idyosnycratic cast of ragged and theatrical wayfarers, carved in an illusionistic combination of ivory and boxwood often with the inclusion of gleaming glass eyes, as in the present example. Troger carved in the workshops of Schmiedecker, Moll and Faistenberger before setting up his own large and succesful workshop in Haidhausen. One of his patrons was Maximilian III Joseph, Elector of Bavaria and the Pied Piper is typical of the work produced for the Elector from the early 1730's. A similar amalgamation of materials as the present model is also seen in Troger's accomplished multi-figural groups such as his Judgement of Solomon in the Victoria & Albert Museum and his Chariot with Silenus in the Hermitage.. . RELATED LITERATURE. The Dictionary of Art, entry by Hannelore Hägele; Möller, nos.67-69, p. 120-125; Theuerkauff (1984), pp. 136-142, figs. 73-75
