Description:
Angiolo Tommasi (Italian, 1858-1923) Paesaggio delle Ande signed 'Angiolo Tommasi' (lower left) oil on canvas 44.5 x 74cm (17 1/2 x 29 1/8in). Angiolo Tommasi studied at the Communal School of Design, Livorno, under Natale Betti and Angiolo Lemmi. He later attended the Academy of Fine Arts, Florence, with his brother Ludovico and cousin Adolfo Tommasi. All three artists were strongly influenced by the Italian realist painter Silvestro Lega, who was a frequent visitor to the Tommasi family villa at Bellariva. Tommasi was also influenced by Giacomo Puccini at Torre del Lago, and it was here that he came into contact with several exponents of the Tuscan artistic avant-garde, including Galileo Chini and Oscar Ghiglia. In 1899 Tommasi went to South America, where he travelled in Patagonia in the southernmost section of the Andes mountains, where this particular work was probably painted. He was very well recieved in the area and recieved several commissions from the Argentine government.
