Description:
Francesco Tironi (Venice 1745-1800) An architectural capriccio with a ruined aqueduct and a church beyond, perhaps that of Sant' Elena signed 'Fran: c u s Tironi' and with number '155' (in the border) pen and brown ink, grey wash 5 7/8 x 8 3/8 in. (15 x 21.2 cm.) Theophil Friedrich Jakob Künhans, Venice. Working in the vedutista tradition of Canaletto and Francesco Guardi, Tironi is best known for his prints of Venice and her outlying islands, which were collected in print form in Ventiquattro Prospettive delle Isole della Laguna di Venezia. It is not clear exactly when he was working on the compositions for this publication, although it was probably after 1779 (see T. Pignatti, 'Per i disegni di Francesco Tironi (c.1745-1797', in Studi in onore di Giulio Carlo Argan, Rome, 1984, p. 376). The building seen through the arches of the aqueduct in the present drawing is similar, with its campanile and dome, to the Church of Sant' Elena, represented by Tironi in another drawing whose current location is unknown (Pignatti, op. cit., fig. 20). Although the present drawing is not dated, it was probably executed around 1780, like the other works presented to Kunhans, and is an important addition to the known corpus of drawings by Tironi, of which only 25 were listed by Pignatti.

LOT 227 PROPERTY FROM AN ENGLISH PRIVATE COLLECTION FRANCESCO TIRONI VENICE 1745 - 1797 VENICE, A VIEW OF THE GRAND CANAL LOOKING TOWARDS THEPESCHERIA oil on canvas 80,000—120,000 GBP measurements note 56.2 by 79.3 cm.; 22 1/8 by 31 1/4 in. Probably acquired by the great grandfather of the present ownercirca 1915. We are grateful to both Charles Beddington and Anna Bozena forindependently identifying this as a work by Francesco Tironifollowing inspection of the original. Tironi is known primarily asa draughtsman and documented works by him include a set oftwenty-four engravings by Antonio Sandi, published in 1785 (see D.Succi, Francesco Tironi. Ultimo Vedutista del Settecento Venezia,Pordenone 2004, pp. 5-18). Although in the past Tironi has beencredited with a number of Venetian view paintings, many of thesehave later been given to the Master of the Langmatt FoundationViews or are now thought to be by various anonymous hands. Knownand accepted paintings by him are therefore rare and this makes thepresent work an exciting and important new addition to hisoeuvre.
