Description:
ARCHIBALD THORBURN (SCOTTISH 1860 - 1935), THE WHITE-TAILED EAGLE watercolour on artist's card, signed and dated 1914 34cm x 24cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: The white-tailed eagle is the largest UK bird of prey. It has brown body plumage with a conspicuously pale head and neck which can be almost white in older birds, and the tail feathers of adults are white. In flight it has massive long, broad wings with 'fingered' ends. Its head protrudes and it has a short, wedge-shaped tail. It went extinct in the UK during the early 20th century, due to illegal killing, and the present population has been reintroduced.

Prescott and thence by descent to the present owner Archibald Thorburn 1860-1935 PHEASANTS IN WINTER signed and dated l.l.: Archibald Thorburn 1909 watercolour and bodycolour 48 by 78cm., 19 by 30½in. The sheet appears to be sound. The sky has slightly discoloured otherwise the work appear in good overall condition. Held under glass in a gilt plaster frame; unexamined out of frame.

Original crimson cloth, spine titles gilt, t.e.g. Some cracking to gutters, evidence of tape removal to end-papers, spine darkened, soiling to boards, wear to spine ends. Provenance: Walter Behrnard Sampson (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. "[O]f unusual value in showing variety of attitude and expression in animal-life" (Zimmer). The plates reproduce watercolors and sketches made by the author; 48 are of birds. Ayer/Zimmer p 635; Wood p 597.
