JOSE TAPIRO Y BARO

(spanish 1830-1913)

THE TAMBOURINE PLAYER

Signed 'J Tapiro' bottom left, watercolor and gouache on paper

16 x 10 5/8 in. (40.6 x 27cm)

This watercolor is double-matted and framed. We are not able to safely remove the inner overmat that directly frames this work without running the risk of damaging the watercolor itself. The size of the watercolor as listed in the auction catalogue is thus actually the sight size. The watercolor is executed on paper, and it may or may not be laid down - we cannot tell. The overall work is back with wood panel. This watercolor appears to be in fine condition, with generally rich, fresh colors. The only condition problem we note are areas of tiny paint flecks/spots that are missing, exposing the ground, mostly at lower right near corner, and to a much lesser degree, at lower left.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

CATALOGUE NOTE
Tapiro developed a preference for Orientalist subjects early onin his career, and his most accomplished works in this genre wereexecuted in watercolour, a medium at which he excelled, as evidentin the present work.
Depicting a group of young boys playing city guards on theramparts of the city fortifications built around the Medina ofTangiers by Pasha Er Riffi,
The Presentation
displaysTapiro's love of detailed, ethnographic renderings, as well as histechnical accomplishment in his chosen medium.
Tapiro's work has often be compared to that of his contemporary andclose friend, Mariano Fortuny. Fortuny and Tapiro studied togetherat the schools of fine art of Reus and Barcelona, and Tapiro evenreceived a bravery medal for having saved Fortuny from drowning. In1857 the two friends embarked on a study trip that took them fromSpain to Rome, then Morrocco (1860), back to Rome (1863), on toGrenada (1871) and back to Morrocco (1872). In 1876, followingFortuny's death, Tapiro settled permanently in Tangiers.
