Attributedto RICHARD WILSON ( 1714 - 1782 ) Cattle withdrover, figures and ruin in a landscape, oil oncanvas, the stretcher indistinctly inscribed in pencil,and with inventory number / 561129, 13.5 in x 16.5 in,unframed. Richard Wilson was a Welsh landscape painter, born inPenegoes, Montgomeryshire, and one of the foundermembers of the Royal Academy in 1768. From 1750 to 1757 he was inItaly and adopted landscape on the advice of Francesco Zuccarelli.Painting in Italy and afterwards in England, he was thefirst major British painter to primarily concentrate onlandscape, but saw and rendered only the general effectsof nature thereby creating a personal, ideal styleinfluenced by Claude Lorrain and the Dutch landscape tradition. Hislandscapes were acknowledged as an influence by Constable andTurner. At the Sale of the contents of Rug, Merionethshire, by auction in 1859, Re TheLate Sir Robert Williames Vaughan, Bart., deceased, by order of the executors, conducted by Mr William Dew of Bangor, five Wilson'swere offered for sale, to which the footnote in thecatalogue reads............ ...................were painted by himfor the family while residing in theneighbourhood..........possessing all the brilliancy of colour -transparency of atmosphere and natural tone, for whichthis favourite Artist was so celebrated. Attributedto WILLIAM ALFRED DELAMOTTE ( 1775- 1863 ) Aportrait of Rhûg, circa 1820, oil on canvas,re-lined, 15.75 in x 20.5 in, framed. Thehouse, built in Grecian fashion in buff sandstone, was inherited by Edward Williames Vaughan, ( the second son of Robert Howell Vaughan, later 1stBaronet ) in 1780, at the age of just 13 from hiscousin Maria Charlotte Pugh, granddaughter of Owen Salusbury, the last male heir of that line. He changed his name to Vaughan- Salusbury on 21st May 1791. On his death at Syracuse on 15thSeptember 1807, it passed to his younger brother GriffithHowell Vaughan, and in turn on Griffith's death in1848, to his nephew Sir Robert Williames Vaughan, 3rd Baronet.
