Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner.
Juan Carlos Pereda has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.
The sitter of this portrait, Herminia Arrate de Dávila, an artist in her own right, was the wife of the Chilean Ambassador to Washington, Carlos Dávila Espinoza (from 1927-1931), and later President of Chile, who was one of the earliest patrons of Rufino Tamayo.

1975, pencil signed, numbered 51/100 (there were also 10 artist 's proofs), the full sheet, Ferdinand Roten Galleries, Baltimore, Maryland, publisher. Color lithograph on wove paper.

With minor handling creases in places and two lines of irregular pressure mark at upper left extending from the sheet edge into the hat (visible only when examined out of the frame under raking light, there is no attendant ink loss). With an 8 in. diagonal soft crease across the lower left sheet corner and a 1 in. area with very minor ink loss where it intersects the black shoulder line. The extreme lower right corner with a 1/4 in. crease. A 1/4 in. pale residue stain at the extreme upper right sheet edge. Old hinge tape and very pale staining evident verso, otherwise overall in very good condition.
