Condition Report: Some frame abrasions with associated retouched along left frame edge. Dark area in sky may be old overpaint, though it does not fluoresce. In overall good condition. Description: Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (American, 1819-1905) South Pond n' Long Lake, Hamilton County, New York Signed and dated "A.F. Tait.1881." l.r., titled, signed, and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 14 x 22 1/8 in. (35.6 x 56.2 cm), framed. Condition: Minor frame abrasion, probable old retouch to sky, surface grime. N.B. The painting at hand is likely the work referenced in the artist's check list as "81.13, R.C. South Pond, Study for a larger Pictu(re), 14 x 22." (1) 1. Walter H. Cadbury and Henry F. Marsh, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, Artist in the Adirondacks (Newark: University of Delaware Press, 1973), p. 255. Inscribed on the reverse: R.C.1./South Pond n'Long Lake/Hamilton Co NY./A.F. Tait/1881" Fine craquelure to u.l. corner. Work seems to have been partially cleaned in a band across the sky. There appears to be some minimal old retouch in the sky beneath the varnish layer, with some broad washes of retouch to the sky (perhaps to cover craquelure). There is a yellowish cast to the surface in the upper section of the sky and to the area just around the mountain top, which appear to be areas of discolored varnish. When examined under UV light, there is no bright paint fluorescence that would indicate any recent retouch. Surface grime, with a drip of foreign matter to l.r. The painting would benefit from a cleaning.
