ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT
(american 1819-1905)
HOUNDS ON THE SCENT
Signed and dated 'A. F. Tait 99' bottom right, watercolor over pencil on paper
4 3/4 x 8 in. (12.1 x 20.3cm)
provenance:
Private Collection, Virginia.
Estimate $1,000-1,500
Framed in a partially ebonized carved wood (walnut?) frame, roughly in an Eastlake style. The watercolor is on paper that is somewhat unevenly cut and laid down. We see no evidence of restoration. As seen in the catalogue photo, at lower right, roughly below the rightmost dog, and at lower left, between the front legs of the leftmost dog, the sheet color is a pale brown. We presume this coloration is intended by Tait, and is thus not a condition flaw. There appears to be some very slight, unobtrusive scattered foxing. The sheet has uneven cockling; it does not lie flat in all areas.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

According to the artist's record book, the present work was painted in May 1887 for the Wellington Gun Club of Boston, Massachusetts as a prize for the best amateur shot. The painting depicts Amos F. Adams, a former president of the Gun Club and Boston merchant and two shooting tournament award winning setters. The setters, Gus Bondher and son, Count Bondher, were bred by Richard Purcell Llewellin in England. Tait documented the event and names in an inscription on the reverse of the canvas, prior to lining. Tait later painted a second version of the composition for Amos Adams' personal collection which is presently in a private collection.
