TABER, ISAIAH (1830-1912) "Chinese Apothecary" * "Smoking Room, Chinese Restaurant." Together, 2 views of San Francisco's Chinatown. Albumen prints, 7 1/2x9 1/2 inches (19.1x24.1 cm.) and the reverse, on the original mounts, with Taber's credit, title and inventory numbers in the negative. 1870-1880 Estimate $2,000-3,000 with--"Chinese Restaurant" * "Store Window in Chinatown." Together, 2 photographs. Albumen prints, each 7 1/2x4 3/4 inches, on the original mounts. Circa 1880.

Taber, Isaiah West Chinese Quarter, San Francisco » enlarge "Chinese Quarter, S.F. Cal." 1870s/1880s. 3 albumen prints. Each circa 20 x 12,5 cm and 12,5 x 20 cm. Each with photographer's name, title and number B58 , B11 , B5 in lower edge in the negative, mounted to board (slight traces of use). Together with the creditor John G. Cook, Taber took over Carleton E. Watkins' negatives and gallery in the 1870s when Watkins went bankrupt. Later in 1906 Taber himself lost his gallery and negatives, which included 80 tons of portrait negatives and 20 tons of view negatives, in the devastating fire which followed the San Francisco earthquake. - Slightly faded in edges, one with light scuff marks in upper left corner, otherwise in very good condition.
