CLEMENT NYE SWIFT (American, 1846-1918) Study from Nature, Stonemason's Studio, Paris, 1871 Oil on canvas 30 x 24-1/2 inches (76.2 x 62.2 cm) Signed, dated, titled, and inscribed lower right: Clement N. Swift / Study from Nature Paris 1871 FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST Painter, writer and photographer Clement Swift of Acushnet, Massachusetts was at home on both sides of the Atlantic. He studied with Adolph Yvon and Henri Harpignies, and was associated with the artists' colony in Pont Aven, France during the years 1870-71, at the time he produced the present painting. He exhibited extensively at Paris Salons through the 1870s and early 80s. In the United States he was an active member of the New Bedford Art Club.

Advertisement for "Benefit of North End Mission."
Signed "Clement Swift" l.l. Oil on canvas, showing an acrobat standing on the back of a horse, under a stone Gothic arch, presumably the Unitarian Chapel which is the stated location of the Benefit, 24 x 17 3/4 in., unframed. Condition: Minor patching to reverse with associated retouch, pencil inscriptions on painted surface.
