Description:
Jacques-François-Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines (French, 1769-1823) Marché aux chevaux signed and dated 'Sw. des Fontaines 1793' (lower left, under the child's hoop) oil on panel 21 ¾ x 31 7/8 in. (55.3 x 81 cm.) Jacques-François Swebach Desfontaines trained in the studio of his father, the painter, engraver and sculptor François-Louis Swebach, and with Michel Hanson Duplessis. A child prodigy, he first exhibited at the Salon de la Correspondance in Paris at the age of only fourteen, where he presented his work under the pseudonym Fountein. The artist\\\’s prolific skill as a painter was not limited to canvas, and from 1803 to 1813 Swebach was also the Premier Peintre at the Sèvres porcelain factory, and following the Restoration of the Monarchy would go on to work for Tsar Alexander I as Premier Peintre at the Imperial porcelain factory in Saint Petersburg. The present picture is a prime example of the types of equestrian scenes for which Swebach is perhaps best known today, and which he began painting after the Revolution. While the scene may seem somewhat prosaic to modern eyes, the revolutionary message of this picture would not have been lost on Swebach\\\’s contemporaries. Painted in the same year as the infamous Reign of Terror began in France and in which Jacques-Louis David painted La Mort de Marat, Swebach\\\’s Marché aux cheveaux was inspired by both revolutionary ideas and the artist's fascination with 17th century Dutch painting. By depicting and celebrating the virtue and simplicity of the lives of merchant-class and lower class French citizens, Swebach draws a sharp contrast between their lives and those of the aristocracy. Not lost on Swebach's contemporaries would have been the red, white, and blue of the revolutionary tricolore hanging prominently from the tent at right, which a military figure is seen entering. The tricolore was inspired by the cockades worn by the Paris militia during the storming of the Bastille, which were blue and red, the traditional colors of the city of Paris. The colors, combined with the 'ancient French color' of white, were united to form the flag, which was adopted in 1790, only three years before the present work was painted, and which was a potent symbol of the Revolution
