Sutcliffe, Frank Meadow Rural couple » enlarge Rural couple. Circa 1910. Vintage sepia carbon print on heavy chamois paper. 30,4 x 26,1 cm. Signed by the photographer in pencil in lower right corner; copyright number 176 handwritten in pencil on the verso. Frank Sutcliffe's pictoral photographs focus on the rural landscape of Yorkshire, England and its inhabitants. Sutcliffe worked as a photographer until 1922 when he assumed the position of curator of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society until shortly before his death in 1941. - Minor traces of use, otherwise in excellent condition.

LOT 50 FRANK MEADOW SUTCLIFFE (1853-1941) VIEW OF WHITBY HARBOUR, 1909 3,000—5,000 GBP DESCRIPTION Warm toned carbon print, mounted on card. Signed and inscribed 'Whitby' in the negative in the lower right corner. Signed again and also inscribed 'Whitby' in pencil on the reverse of the mount and there dated. The artist's initials and a negative number (2097) incised in the lower left corner of the image and only partially covered by original retouching. LITERATURE AND REFERENCES A close variant print is identified on the website of the Sutcliffe Gallery, (www.sutcliffe-gallery.co.uk) still trading in Whitby, North Yorkshire, under the image reference Print 7-2.
