From the artist to Rose and Marcel Barthelemy;

thence by descent to the present owner;

European private collection.

Gustave Surand studied under Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921) in Paris. His travels to Tunisia in 1884 provided him with the opportunity to study animals in their natural habitat. Upon his return he specialized in wild animal motifs. In the present lot he meticulously portrays a lion at rest on a rock in a landscape. Lions and tigers were his favorite subjects.

Born in Paris, and studying under Jean-Paul Laurens, Surandpainted a diverse range of subjects. He exhibited at the Salon ofFrench artists from 1884 and won many awards including bronze andsilver medals at the Exposition Universelle. He was made Chevalierde la Légion d'honneur in 1910. Nantes and Chambery museums havesome of his works.
