Description:
102 by 165cm., 40¼ by 65in. signed and dated l.r. Philip. E Stretton/ 1893 oil on canvas PROVENANCE Acquired privately c.1950 Thence by descent to the present owner CATALOGUE NOTE This magnificent work is one of Stretton's most ambitious paintings in terms of style, composition and scale. Born and bred in London, Stretton was heavily influenced by the work of Sir Edwin Landseer. He started exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1884 with Disturbed. This was followed in 1885 by On Guard and Feeding Time . The subjects were invariably dogs, often in circumstances with a simple narrative. His subjects are imbued with subtle human emotion. Such anthropomorphised animals were hugely popular with the Victorian middle class, thanks in no small part to Landseer who had mastered this art to an exceptional yet subtle degree. In the present work sentimentality has given way to a far greater degree of realism. The pack of hounds are presented with no emotion other than exhaustion as they head for home at the end of the day. The last vestiges of sunlight are rapidly disappearing over the horizon as the temperature plummets. This is clearly evident in the ruddy complexion and hunched stance of the young whipper-in. The pair of hounds in the foreground are collared together suggesting they are barely beyond puppyhood. Many artists of the period would present a pack of hounds in a more dramatic manner enjoying the thrill of the chase, particularly working on a canvas of this scale. Stretton's composition however, with its honest simplicity, stimulates a far greater degree of intimacy and empathy from the viewer.

Description:
philip eustace stretton (fl. 1884-c.1919) a favourite collie dog signed l.r.: philip e stretton oil on canvas oval, 51 by 39.5cm., 20 by 15iin. provenance: william lever, 1st viscount leverhulme, hanging in the art gallery (ag 146) phillip eustace stretton made his name as a painter of dog portraits and his talent lay in not only recreating the animal's image but also by managing to convey an element of the dog's character and temperament within his brushstrokes. this portrait not only depicts a favourite collie but also conjures up a kindness of nature thereby implying not only a favourable nature but also a cherished and loved companion. this would have had a strong appeal for leverhulme who owned a large number of dogs including barry, a magnificent st. bernard. stretton was born and lived in london and flourished as an artist between 1884 and 1919. he exhibited eighteen works at the royal academy including such titles as puppyhood, the pet of the kennel and left in charge, see lot no.408
