Yehezkel Streichman (Israeli, 1906-1993)
Reclining woman
initialed in Hebrew and dated '59' (lower right); further signed (verso)
oil on cardboard
39 x 50cm (15 3/8 x 19 11/16in).
Painted in 1959, this composition belongs to one of the most important periods of Streichman's work. In 1948 Streichman was one of the founding members of the New Horizons Group. From the mid 1940s until the mid 1950s, the stamp of the Picasso and Braque oeuvre is evident in most of Streichman's works. The artist's growing tendency away from the faithful representation of reality is transformed into a reservoir of forms, directions and colours. In the early 50s, he turned from landscape to portraiture, interiors and still life. In this work, the spatial depth is moderated and the flatness of the composition and decorative quality of the forms are emphasized so that line and contour are stressed as significant, independent components of the composition. Simultaneously, Streichman maintains a suggestion of realistic representation in the composition's objects. The present work is recorded in the artist's archive.
