Otto Strutzel

Otto Strützel (Dessau 1855-1930 Munich) A Summer Day on the Coast at Gotland, signed Otto Strützel, oil on canvas, 43.5 x 63 cm, framed, (Rei) Otto Strützel was a landscape and animal painter, as well as a graphic artist and illustrator. From 1871 he studied at the art school in Leipzig. His studies took him to places including Tyrol, Murrhardt, Nancy and Lake Constance. Like his colleague Hugo Mühlig, Strützel joined the Willingshausen Painters’’’’ Colony.Strützel married a Swede and their honeymoon took him to her homeland. The work here shows the remains of St George’’’’ s church in Visby, Gotland, and was probably executed during a subsequent visit by the artist.
