9½ x 15¼ in. (24.1 x 38.6 cm.)

Provenance
Notes: In the inventory of the contents of Jacopo Bassano's studio drawn up after the artist's death in 1592, a number 64 is recorded as 'Il battesimo di N. S. da S. Gio. Battista, cioè una Tavola d'altare sbozzata'. Although many of Jacopo's unfinished works were completed by his heirs and consigned to the clients who had originally ordered them, the Baptism was kept by the family as an example of the master's final creative effort. It was still in the Bassano household in 1648 when it was recorded by Ridolfi, but had disappeared by the late 18th century.

The identity of this missing Baptism was considered by Rearick to be a picture that surfaced on the Munich art market in 1931, although its attribution was not universally accepted, and whose composition corresponds with this hitherto unrecorded version (private collection; see W.R. Rearick, catalogue of the exhibition, Jacopo Bassano, Museo Civico, Bassano del Grappa, and Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, 1992-1993, pp. 452-53, no. 79). The Munich picture is smaller (110 x 90 cm.); it extends slightly on the right and at the top and there are some minor differences, for example, it ommits the Baptist's cross and the landscape is more unresolved. In colouring and in handling the two pictures are closely related and the fluid brushwork deployed in the present work accords well with Jacopo's late style.
